On May 2nd, Prof Euro Beinat will be speaking on ‘Data Science and Predictive Analytics’, exploring the emerging world of collective sensing, how new data streams such as social media or digital transactions provide new sources to understand our collective behavior and make complex systems such as cities more transparent. Annual UNIGIS network meeting @Krakow

This weekend, UNIGIS Krakow is hosting the annual worldwide network meeting at the Jagiellonian University, Krakow. As one of the oldest European universities, ‘UJ’ was one of the first to adopt the innovative distance learning approach for geospatial professionals, and already is serving as a venue for this gathering for the second time. UNIGIS at Geospatial World Forum, Rotterdam

UNIGIS International again was invited to this high-profile annual industry flagship event – GWF’13, representing the worldwide scope of geospatial distance education in an exhibit booth. Frequented by alumni from across the globe, current students and interested leaders from the GIS community, the UNIGIS booth coordinated by Dr. Shahnawaz with strong support from UNIGIS Amsterdam turned out to be a popular meeting place. Today, Christian Hürzeler received the price for 1st place for his thesis titled “Der Preis der Aussicht. UNIGIS Salzburg – MSc class #20!

This month, the 20th annual intake of UNIGIS MSc students have started their coursework towards this highly regarded professional qualification in Geoinformatics and GIScience.  In early 1994, the first committed group of dedicated Masters students embarked on their journeys towards a postgraduate degree in GIS at the University of Salzburg, Austria. Meeting for their first residential workshop, the dedication of the 1994 cohort was very similar like this year’s, but of course back then no reassuring role models were available for these enterprising spirits. UNIGIS now an Academic Member of FIG

The 35. FIG (International Federation of Surveyors) Working Week was held in Rome from the 6th to the 10th of May in 2012. The motto of Italian Working Week is “Knowing to manage the territory, protect the environment, evaluate the cultural heritage”. 500+ papers have been accepted for presentation in Rome in almost 100 sessions, forums and workshops (http://www.fig.net/fig2012/downloads/tech_prog.pdf). Many of the papers are peer reviewed and published soon at the Surveyors Reference Library (http://www.fig.net/srl/).  The FIG Council has admitted UNIGIS International Association as an academic member of FIG.
