Read more…Dr. Deniz Gerçek Turkish language ‘lifelong learning’ students are now supported through a local UNIGIS Turkey contact point that is coordinated by Dr. Deniz Gerçek. Dr Gerçek received her PhD from the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara and conducted part of her PhD studies at the University of Salzburg. Since 2010 she is affiliated with Kocaeli University in İzmit. Her research focus is on Remote Sensing and Object-Based Image Analysis connecting with other fields of GIScience including Spatial Statistics, and Application Development. The first cohort of Turkish students will be welcomed for the next student intake in autumn. …
Read more…Through systematic evaluation, feedback and international cooperation, UNIGIS Salzburg has always strived for top national and international quality standards in terms of content, structure and organisation of the two distance learning study programmes UNIGIS professional and UNIGIS MSc. National regulations in Austria, however, do not provide a legal framework for external evaluation of study programmes at federal universities by the official national accreditation agency AQ Austria. Therefore guidelines for a voluntary accreditation first had to be established. Today we can proudly state that UNIGIS is the first continuing education programme (‘Universitätslehrgang’) at a national university in Austria reviewed and successfully accredited …

Read more…The UNIGIS International Association (UIA) awarded this year’s Academic Excellence Prize for the best Master Thesis to Agnieszka Wypych, UNIGIS Krakow. Ms Wypych received the award from UIA president Prof. J. Strobl at the GI_Forum conference in Salzburg, where she presented her research to an international audience. To introduce her talk, Agnieszka Wypych reflected on UNIGIS as a life-long learning opportunity. With UNIGIS she aimed at getting GIS-educated to complement her primary domain of meteorology. She demonstrated that she succeeded in reaching this aim at a remarkably high level. Congratulation Agnieszka for the well-deserved award!
Read more…This year’s UNIGIS Switzerland Day at the ‘University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil’ (HSR) viewed GISc from a gender perspective. Exclusively female speakers gave an impressive overview on the firm establishment of GIS in public authorities, consultancies, research and education. Apart from innovative applications, many presentations focused on the current challenge of crafting spatial data infrastructures for the management and the public provision of spatial data. Read more…“I need to know more about GIS.” This was the common objective of 28 students meeting in Salzburg for the UNIGIS MSc starter workshop. However, GIS was not the central topic of the workshop. Prof. Strobl challenged such expectations right away in his welcoming talk: “we do not expect you to leave Salzburg knowing much more about GIS, we want you to get to know each other”. Read more…Alexander Willberg has finished the German-language UNIGIS MSc study programme at the University of Salzburg with an excellent Master Thesis on hyperspectral remote sensing for land use change detection. With his graduation Mr Willberg not only achieves a major milestone in his personal career but also rounds off the UNIGIS Salzburg alumni network as the 1500th graduate – MSc and diploma/certificate programmes combined. Read more…The UNIGIS International Asscociation is at the annual ESRI User Conference. This year more than 15,000 GI professionals from around the world turn San Diego to a global GIS hotspot. An excellent opportunity not just to learn about new features of ArcGIS software and ESRI’s ‘road ahead’ but also to build upon and expand UNIGIS’ wide name recognition, to meet prospective students and to network with a wide range of GI-related interest groups and organisations.
